There used to come on DD a serial - Udan.. i dont know how many of you remember it. But that was my first impression of Kiran Bedi. My father used to tell me that -this is the woman you have to become! It is since then i have held her in high esteem.
Usually one cannot expect to find in Lucknow Times , anything worthwhile enough to mention in your - the new thing I learnt today - blog.. but Kiran Bedi was in our city and it turns out she grew flowers in desert!.. ( sry cliche quote.. but what can i say . so is my opinion about the picturesque Lucknow Times.. )
She pointed out how legally illiterate our young India is. The truth is that education has had nothing to do with our literacy in matters like Legal knowledge ( we also possess very less financial knowledge infact.) We - whether it be the rural India- which suffers from illiteracy in general, or even the so called modern India have little or no knowledge about Indian Law.
You see we have forgotten our own hindi/urdu months and celebrate the Western new year.. hope some days later we do not begin to celebrate the American Independence Day.. You see those people CARE to remain in theri culture . We Dont.
Today i bumped across a book on Indian Law and the first page i opened to browse through - it was written that in India - there are no laws to deal with sexual harassment! No wonder we have not had an amendment yet- we as a people , as the next generation - are so unaware!
People we have got to be more aware of our own laws than just knowing that 18 is the age you can marry and 21 is the age you can drink out of your own choice.
What is the big idea behind becoming adult - if you dont know what comes with it. Merely trusting other people's word for what is Right and Wrong ! ?

heyy Elizabeth... its good 2 see someone raising the very basic but thoroughly important question of legal literacy. But what i feel, the implementation of existing laws in this country pose such a big question mark, that people have hardly any trust in the legal institutions.
ReplyDeleteSo more than being aware of the legal facts.. the citizens have chosen to be oblivion of any supposedly available legal help.
ya i agree...youth today( m included) have a zilch faith in d laws of dis democracy..v r supposed to b d biggest democratic nation bt where does one actually get a feel of it.
ReplyDeleteThe corruption has becum such a part n parcel of Indian judiciary n law dat people feel useless to evn go to seek justice.. ny small incident of injustice n wrong doing is neglected jst to ward off ny further misdoings..
Here wat do u think is more important, knowing d laws or creating an atmosphere where dey can actually b put to sum use..??
Apoorva, the question u raised perhaps has its answer intertwined in the question itself. How can a suitable and just atmosphere be created without the people being aware of it??
ReplyDeleteOnly when the people get aware of their legal responsibilities and have a sense of respect towards the system, we can expect some improvement.
no dreaming indian, actually its nt..wat i tried to say ws dat laws cn only b used if people feel dey r worthy n useful.. i learn sumthing if only in d long run i feel it might prove helpful.. i wnt try putting my efforts into sumthing dat holds no future n no promise..isn't??
ReplyDeleteBeingSumone.... yess u work hard towards a goal only if u hav faith in its viability.. but then the concept of justice, corruption are not stand alone goals which a government can create and people follow. No, these are issues directly involving the people and when the people understand and respect the concerns, only then a wide portion of society can productively utilize the laws and related institutions.
ReplyDeleteOnly when people like you and me are honest and follow laws in our daily lives.. then corruption and injustice can be removed.
